FEED & EPCM – Revamp of the Matosinhos Refinery to comply with IMO 2020
Portugal
IDOM has provided FEED and EPCM services to GALP, which have also included technical assistance for the construction and pre-commissioning phase, for the renovation of the refinery installations that have allowed the production of marine diesel in accordance with the new IMO 2020 requirements.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a global limit for Sulphur (S) in Fuel Oil used on board ships of 0.5% m/m (mass by mass), commencing on January 1, 2020.
The current global limit for Sulphur content of ship fuel oil is 3.5% m/m. In order to cope with this change, GALP ENERGIA is developing alternative formulations to ensure the availability of Fuel Oil 0.5% S at the Matosinhos Refinery (RM) at the beginning of the second half of 2019.
In the scenarios under study, the Matosinhos Refinery will produce:
- Fuel Oil 1% S to supply the domestic market
- Fuel Oil 0.5% S for export
