Fuerteventura airport control tower design
Spain
The Fuerteventura airport control tower design project, developed by IDOM, is a key element in the strategic expansion and modernization of Fuerteventura Airport in Spain. The control tower stands out for its unique architectural approach, with the operations room—the “fanal”—positioned 33 meters above ground, providing controllers with optimal, secure visibility of the entire airport.
The air-traffic control room is at a height of 33 m, and the rest of the building contains technical areas, offices and restrooms
The rest of the building accommodates technical spaces, offices, and rest areas, all organized around a central courtyard covered by a wooden pergola that modulates light and creates differentiated environments according to use requirements. The tower’s geometry is shaped by white concrete walls and ascending copper roofs, blending the tower with the terminal and giving the airport a cohesive visual identity.
The Fuerteventura airport control tower design also features efficiency and safety solutions: the perimeter staircase is placed externally for safety reasons, and the concrete is punctuated with latticework and large windows, providing lightness and natural illumination to the interior. The functional layout clearly separates technical areas from administrative and office spaces, ensuring efficient and flexible use. The result is a control tower that combines architectural innovation, operational functionality, and sustainability, supporting the growth and international positioning of Fuerteventura Airport.
