Gran Canaria airport terminal extension

Spain

The Gran Canaria Airport terminal extension project responds to the growing demand for passengers and cargo at Spain’s fifth largest airport. With more than 10.3 million passengers, 37.5 million kg of cargo and 114,355 operations per year, this terminal expansion is part of the Master Plan promoted by AENA to provide the airport with greater capacity, improve safety and optimize the quality of services for both passengers and airlines.

In addition to increasing its operational capacity, the Gran Canaria Airport terminal extension project seeks to improve efficiency, sustainability and user experience. The intervention contemplates the expansion of the terminal building in three directions: to the north, with an additional 14,600 m² and a new boarding dock with several walkways that allow a total of 15 contact positions, two of them double; to the west, with the expansion of the check-in hall, the creation of a large concourse with 36 new counters and two new elevated walkways over 6,700 m²; and to the south, with an additional 5,200 m² destined to segregate international passenger flows from the rest, enhancing operational clarity and comfort.

The project, designed by the Lamela-Paymacotas-GOC joint venture, was the winner of the tender called by AENA and will be carried out without interrupting the airport’s operations, guaranteeing continuous service to users and stakeholders. The intervention also includes new baggage reclaim halls, enlarged security filters and areas dedicated to island traffic, improving connectivity within the archipelago.

For the Works Management, Technical Assistance, Control and Surveillance, AENA has entrusted IDOM through the UTE ATCV NUEVO EDIFICIO TERMINAL GANDO, ensuring an efficient and safe management of this ambitious expansion, key for the economic and tourist development of the Canary Islands. The project will allow the airport to serve more than 16 million passengers per year, consolidating its role as a strategic node in the Atlantic region.
