Integral Management Plan for the Ivory Coast

Africa

Côte d’Ivoire’s 566 km coastline is home to more than a third of the country’s population. The population is concentrated in large urban centres such as Abidjan, San Pedro and Jacqueville, as well as in smaller communities linked to fishing and cocoa production. This coastal zone, rich in natural and ecosystem resources, faces major challenges from climate change, such as rising sea levels, storm surges, beach erosion and coastal flooding.

Integrated Coastal Development and Management Plan

Faced with this situation, the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme (WACA), an initiative of the World Bank (WB), has developed the Integrated Coastal Development and Management Plan (ICDMP) with the technical support of IDOM as the project’s Design Team. The ICDMP aims to provide local authorities with a territorial planning framework that favours an integrated and inclusive approach to the use of the coastal zone, with particular attention to the conservation of coastal resources.

This tool is a roadmap for the mitigation of natural phenomena and territorial planning with a horizon of 2050, integrating a coherent and participatory vision between the different systems that make up the coastal space. The strategy also includes a pilot project for the development of the Grand-Béréb population, which will provide the methodological basis for resilient planning and can be replicated in other areas of the Ivorian coast.
