King Khaled LC3 Power Plant: Advanced engineering for reliable power supply at KKIA International Airport

Saudi Arabia

The King Khaled LC3 Power Plant, located at King Khaled International Airport (KKIA), is designed to provide medium-voltage power to key airport buildings, including terminals 1 to 5. This King Khaled LC3 Power Plant, delivered under an EPC contract by SSEM with engineering by IDOM, features an 87 MVA backup system using 34 diesel generators, with 3 units in reserve to ensure full capacity during maintenance. The plant is housed in a unique building seamlessly integrated with the terminals, meeting GACA’s requirements to conceal industrial equipment and maximize architectural harmony.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GACA) has contracted SSEM to develop the LC3 project, under an EPC arrangement

This is a Power Plant equipped with a backup system with a capacity of 87 MVA using an electric generation system of 34 diesel generators, with 3 reserve units to ensure the design capacity of the system during shutdown of any of the generators for maintenance.

The plant is installed in a singular building integrated with the airport terminals, responding to the client’s requirement that all industrial installation elements be hidden and that it be integrated as much as possible with the rest of the terminals.

IDOM has developed basic and detailed engineering services of the project for SSEM.
