New trolleybus line in Mexico City

Mexico

Within a consultancy assignment with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in the framework of the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF), IDOM has been working on the planning studies for the creation of an electric bus corridor on the south road axis (Eje 8 Sur) of Mexico City. This road runs between Santa Martha Acatitla – on the city limits of Mexico City and the State of Mexico – and Mixcoac (metro stop on lines 12 and 7 of the city). A trolleybus which was in service on this line until 2012, ceased operation with the opening of Line 12 of the Metro.

Zero-emission mobility

In this context, we have developed the mobility study, the demand study, a study on air pollution and the conceptual design of the complete street for the entire corridor. We have estimated the total investment cost of the project and the operating costs, considering the three electromobility alternatives proposed by the client. Likewise, we have generated the necessary inputs for the cost-benefit analysis and the financial-economic evaluation of the project.

One of the most important aspects of this work has involved a comparison of technology alternatives for electric buses (Trolleybuses, BEBs and Flash charge). A Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis has been carried out for the project evaluation period (30 years). Recovering the trolleybus for this axis proved to be the most technically and economically feasible option.

In the development of this study, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with Municipal Transport Company of Madrid, preparing the operation plans for the different technology alternatives, and with the PTV Group providing support in carrying out the studies of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) derived from the proposed intervention.
