Remodelling of the Monumental Stadium for River Plate

Argentina

IDOM was asked by River Plate to carry out the renovation project of the Monumental stadium. The proposed design maintains the essence and tradition of the historic stadium, while carrying out an intense transformation to adapt it to the needs and standards of modern soccer in the 21st century: expanding its capacity to make it the largest in South America and improving the comfort of fans, services and access to the stadium.

As reported in the Argentine media and on the club’s own website, IDOM has carried out an extensive study of alternatives to find the optimum one that would allow the viability of the important reform. On the one hand, after eliminating the athletics track and lowering the pitch, new low stands have been implemented close to the pitch, generating greater contact with the public.

The structural solution of the first grandstand developed by IDOM works independently of the existing structure and adapts to the change of curvature between the elliptical shape of the existing structure and the rectangular shape of the playing field.

The Monumental Stadium remodeling project also contemplates the creation of new boxes (hospitality spaces) in the middle stands, thus achieving a 360º connection between them, together with the creation of a single exit tunnel from the dressing rooms and the placement of new seats in the stadium.

All these changes have led to a major transformation of the historic Monumental, making it the largest and most modern stadium in South America.
