Masterplan for Jeddah

The city of Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, has embarked on an ambitious urban transformation aimed at redefining its mobility and spatial structure. In this context, IDOM was selected—alongside renowned international firms such as Zaha Hadid Architects, Foster + Partners, and HOK—to lead the design of the new urban transport system and the development of the Masterplan for Jeddah.
The project encompasses the comprehensive planning of a multimodal network that includes metro stations, bus stops, water taxi piers, and an intermodal hub. This infrastructure not only meets the functional demands of urban mobility but is also harmoniously integrated into the urban fabric through a coherent and distinctive architectural design that reinforces the city’s identity.
Inspired by the abstract geometries of Arab art and the symbolism of stars as navigational guides through the desert, the design of the stations and public spaces offers a unified visual identity. Each station typology is distinguished through strategic use of color, creating an intuitive, culturally rooted, and visually recognizable urban experience.
One of the core pillars of the transport system and Masterplan for Jeddah is climate sustainability. In response to the region’s extreme environmental conditions, IDOM has implemented architectural solutions that act as thermal and light filters, minimizing the impact of heat and solar radiation. This strategy, inspired by the region’s traditional architecture, ensures thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and a significant reduction in resource consumption.
The Masterplan not only organizes the transport infrastructure but also proposes an integrated urban vision focused on connectivity, livability, and economic development. It prioritizes sustainable mobility, universal accessibility, and the creation of high-quality public spaces, positioning Jeddah as a resilient, modern, and culturally vibrant city.
