IDOM designed four synchronous condensers, improving the stability of the power grid in the UK and Ireland
IDOM designed four synchronous condensers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These are strategic infrastructure projects aimed at improving the stability, reliability and efficiency of high-voltage grids in an environment of growing renewable energy penetration.
Awarded by Elecnor, the projects are being developed in Glencloosagh and Quarry Lane in the Republic of Ireland and in Coleraine and Coolkeragh in Northern Ireland. They form part of the Low Carbon Inertia Services (LCIS) programme, which is promoted by grid operators EirGrid and SONI and led by Statkraft.
As a design engineer, IDOM contributes its specialist knowledge of advanced electrical systems to the development of solutions that provide inertia, reactive power and short-circuit support, essential elements for the safe operation of grids with a high proportion of renewable generation.
This work enabled IDOM to gain valuable experience in synchronous capacitor technology, establishing a strong presence in a critical area for the evolution of electrical systems and the transition to a more sustainable energy model. The facilities are scheduled to come into service in 2027, directly contributing to the region’s decarbonisation targets.
