Railways, Architecture and City

Urban regeneration through the construction of stations

On November 21st last, IDOM took part in the IV Conference on Railways, Architecture and City as organised by ADIF.

The relevance of this congress is greater every year thanks to the participation of various corporations, developers, universities and architecture and engineering professionals that contribute different points of view of the problems linked to the insetting of railway and transport projects in urban contexts, with solutions that favour sustainable, efficient and quality architecture from an operational standpoint.

Our colleague Gonzalo Tello delivered a presentation entitled Urban regeneration through the construction of stations for the new line 6 of the Santiago de Chile metro – a project carried out by IDOM between 2013 and 2016 and running since the autumn of 2018. It explained the opportunities for the development of new urban areas and user-aimed services that arise all around the entrances to these stations and how the new line identity was designed with the idea of boosting its bond with the communities it was going to serve.

A meeting point for theorists and professionals

This year’s congress, apart from professionals from ADIF that showcased some of the most relevant ongoing railway station projects, included the participation of the Polytechnic University of Madrid’s School of Architecture (ETSAM-UPM) and the European University (UEM), as well as INECO and representatives of the Distrito Castellana Norte (DCN) project. As a matter of fact, the Madrid Nuevo Norte project and the future extension of Chamartin Station were some of the issues that were discussed at length. Other international projects were also analysed, such as Penn Station in New York or London’s Thameslink Crossrail.
