SOCIAL INCLUSION OF THE BICYCLE AS A MEANS OF TRANSPORT

A century of progress: Foundation for the future

From January 12 through 16, more than 13,000 transport professionals from around the world are in Washington, DC, on the occasion of the 99th edition of the annual conference of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the most important global transport congress.

This year, under the slogan, A century of progress: Foundation for the future, the program will cover all modes of transport, with approximately 800 sessions and workshops, and more than 5,000 presentations.

Daniel Ricardo Rosas, consultant in the Mobility & Transport department of IDOM, will present the work done with the UCL and the University of Los Andes. Contribution in equity and social inclusion of the bicycle as a means of transport, is the title of this work, where an analysis of accessibility to jobs and study was carried out.

This research evaluates the distribution of accessibility associated with the use of the bicycle among different user groups in Bogotá. The data source used was the last mobility survey available in the city (2015). In addition to the origin, destination and perceived time of the trip, the survey provided data on personal characteristics (age, gender, educational level and occupation) and household (socioeconomic stratum, size and availability of vehicles) of bicycle users. This data was processed, and the potential accessibility by zones to places of work and educations was calculated.
