Fire protection systems in Ascó NPP

Spain

This project was developed in the context of the requirement to redesign the fire protection systems of Ascó NPP in several warehouses in order to comply with the new regulations. This design modification was performed in line with the new requirements specified by the insurance company NEIL regarding the implementation of new detection systems and sprinkler systems in several buildings both within and outside the double fencing.

IDOM was awarded the project under a turnkey contract model (EPCC: Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning), assuming full responsibility for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the new fire protection systems. This comprehensive approach ensured seamless integration across all project phases and minimized interface risks.

To meet the stringent technical and regulatory demands, particularly in the area of Quality Assurance, IDOM assembled a dedicated team of specialists. This team developed and implemented a Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA) program tailored specifically to the project, ensuring full alignment with the rigorous standards of ASME NQA-1.

The experience IDOM has gained through similar projects provides added value, resulting in robust, efficient solutions tailored to the client’s specific needs.

Ultimately, this project not only strengthens the fire safety of the Ascó nuclear power plant facilities, but also serves as an example of how specialized engineering can decisively contribute to the continuous improvement of nuclear safety, in line with industry best practices and IDOM’s ongoing commitment to technical excellence.
