Design of a Vessel Traffic Management Operation System (VTMOS) for implementation in the new control tower of the Port of Barcelona

Spain

The Port Authority of Barcelona, recognized as one of the most important logistics and maritime transport centers in the Mediterranean, is embarking on an ambitious project to improve the efficiency and safety of its port operations.

In this context, it has entrusted IDOM with the design of a Vessel Traffic Management Operation System (VTMOS) to be implemented in the port’s new control tower. This system will provide a comprehensive view of maritime traffic in real time, thus improving safety and optimizing traffic management in the port.

This project goes from the analysis of the current processes of the Port of Barcelona, to the design of the requirements of the new system, followed by assistance in the evaluation and selection of the VTMOS system suppliers, ensuring a successful implementation and a detailed monitoring during the start-up.

The tasks developed by IDOM for the project are the following:

  • Analysis of the current processes of the Port of Barcelona.
  • Definition of the processes to be developed by the system in the new control tower.
  • On-site review of best practices in maritime traffic management and port information in the ports of Hamburg, Rotterdam, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
  • Organizational redesign proposal derived from the process redesign.
  • Definition of new system requirements.
  • Preparation of the technical and economic specifications for the tender of VTMOS system suppliers.
  • Assisted in the evaluation and selection of suppliers.
  • Project management of the system implementation and commissioning.
