Master Plan for Penang Airport

Malaysia

IDOM was part of a consortium appointed to prepare the Master Plan for five Malaysian airports by MAHB, one of the largest airport operator groups handling over 140 million passengers in 2019. IDOM was responsible for the development of the 30-year Master Plan of Penang International Airport, which is the third largest in the country in terms of passenger traffic and the first in terms of the value of goods processed in its freight terminal.

The airport is forecasted to experience a substantial growth in passenger and cargo hence it requires a major expansion. The development of the Master Plan consisted of providing an infrastructure able to accommodate the forecasted demand whilst meeting MAHB, state, and airport community aspirations. A Phased Implementation Plan was prepared that ensured that the Master Plan was implemented in a timely manner through a stepwise approach.

As part of the commission, IDOM was requested to develop the Passenger Terminal Building functional layouts for the first phase development of the Master Plan. The preparation of these functional layouts was focused on getting a Total Airport Experience, as it is one of MAHB’s strategic pillars.

To this end, consideration was given to making reservations for the Airport 4.0 initiative as well as providing a sense of place and an improved commercial offering.
