Rio Bueno hospital

Chile

The Chilean Ministry of Public Works (MOP) launched the Los Ríos–Los Lagos Healthcare Network concession programme, which includes the construction of three hospitals in the Los Ríos Region, located in the municipalities of Los Lagos, La Unión and Río Bueno, as well as a medium-to-high complexity hospital in Puerto Varas, in the Los Lagos Region. Following the award of the concession to Sociedad Concesionaria Región Sur, IDOM was commissioned to develop the three hospitals in the Los Ríos Region, which together will provide 305 beds.

Río Bueno Hospital is a healthcare facility with capacity for 120 beds (53 general care beds, 47 intermediate care beds and 20 mental health beds), three major surgery operating theatres, one minor surgery theatre, one delivery room, 23 consultation rooms for healthcare professionals, an emergency department, and a range of diagnostic, therapeutic, administrative and support services serving a population of approximately 53,000 people.

The architectural proposal is centred on a main building comprising a basement level housing vehicle parking and seismic isolation systems, together with four storeys above ground.

To ensure the hospital is fully integrated into its natural surroundings, patient rooms have been oriented towards the north to maximise access to natural sunlight, while a public hospital boulevard has been located to the west, providing views of the urban landscape of Río Bueno and the green plaza at the hospital entrance.
