Nuclear ageing analysis (TLAAs) review in Laguna Verde

Mexico

IDOM acted in Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant as a specialized consultancy in fracture mechanics, fatigue, and structural integrity. These services were applied to support the evaluation of the plant’s time-limited ageing analysis.

Time limited ageing analyses (TLAAs) are technical studies that make it possible to estimate how the properties and behaviour of the materials and components of a nuclear facility evolve throughout its service life. TLAAs take into account factors such as thermal fatigue, irradiation and corrosion. These ageing analyses around a nuclear power plant are essential to ensure operational safety and decision-making on maintenance and equipment life extension.

As a result of the initial assessment, the services provided by IDOM included a comprehensive review of technical information and documentation. In addition, IDOM identified the specific requirements of the plant and developed a tailored working plan and methodology. During the visit to the plant, IDOM was accompanied by delegates from different organizations such as Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares (ININ) and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). Following the detailed review of component-specific calculations, several areas requiring improvement were identified. The most relevant aspects were: transients and usage factors (CUF, Cumulative Usage Factor) of different Structures, Systems and Components (SSC).
