UPV teacher training faculty
Spain
Located on the Bizkaia Campus (Leioa) of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the building of the UPV Teacher Training Faculty is part of the remodeling of the University Campus carried out within the Campus of International Excellence Program developed in collaboration with the Université de Bordeaux (France). This new piece finishes off its west side with a careful volumetric composition in the shape of an L, where the main body, which houses the general program of classrooms and offices, is governed by the east-west layout of the entire campus. The other arm of the L is integrated into the existing topography, thus maintaining the general layout of the entire complex. The workshop classrooms and the gymnasium, as the most singular pieces of the program, have a place in this volume.
The access is generated parallel to the main volume and accompanied by a water pond under the diagonal structure of the first floor, which brings a sense of lightness and serenity to the architectural ensemble. This outdoor space also acts as a transitional element between the natural environment and the building, favoring landscape integration and enhancing the user experience from the moment of arrival.
Bioclimatic criteria have been continuously present in the architectural design of the UPV Teacher Training Faculty building. Both passive and active measures have been adopted in the interest of sustainability. It is worth mentioning the use of rainwater, the use of solar thermal panels and low temperature boilers, or the application of energy-saving criteria in lighting. All these measures avoid the emission of 500 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere and result in annual savings of 107,000 euros.
In addition, the building has been conceived as an open, flexible learning space adapted to new teaching methodologies, encouraging interaction, creativity, and educational innovation. Its design supports collaborative learning and fosters a dynamic academic environment.
