Istanbul Metro
Turkey
Istanbul, with a population of over 14 million, attracted more than 11 million tourists in 2014. The city has had a Metro System since 1989. Currently, three lines of Istanbul Metro are under construction on the Asian side of the city and four on the European side, significantly expanding the urban mobility network.
Desiging a new line with a total of 15 stations
IDOM is responsible for the design of one of the new metro lines in Istanbul, comprising a total of 15 stations. The scope of work includes, among other tasks, the preparation of the alternatives study, transport and alignment study, geotechnical investigation, feasibility study, architectural and structural design, electromechanical projects, and tender documentation. Additionally, the project includes the design of depots, maintenance workshops, railway signaling systems, centralized control, and emergency ventilation systems.
The station buildings have been grouped into different design typologies: fully underground stations, using various construction methods (cavern, twin-tube, or central shaft), and with different access configurations. Four of the stations will serve as interchanges with other metro lines. Universal accessibility, energy efficiency, and sustainability criteria have also been considered in each proposed architectural solution.
The design of the Istanbul metro stations has been validated based on the estimated future demand during peak periods under two scenarios:
- Normal operation
- Emergency evacuation
IDOM has also analyzed the distribution of future demand at the access points of the new metro line stations. This study focuses on evaluating the capacity of elevators, escalators, and conventional stairs at each access point. It includes an analysis of access times and the interaction between metro passenger flows and the external urban environment during the morning peak hour of the horizon year.
