IDOM strengthens Panama’s position as a tourist destination

Panama is consolidating its position as a leading adventure and ecotourism destination in Latin America. Thanks to a technical manual developed by IDOM.

The IDOM Mexico City and Territory team has developed a technical manual to promote hiking in Panama. This is part of a strategy supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and implemented by the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) as part of the 1,000 km of Trails Program.

This manual comprehensively describes the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance phases of trails in different biophysical environments, from islands and archipelagos to estuaries and mangroves, including mountain environments, aquatic trails and tropical rainforests, highlighting the country’s natural wealth.

The official presentation of the manual took place recently in Panama City, in the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Denisse Guillén, and representatives of funding agencies such as the IDB and CAF, as well as officials from the Ministries of Environment, Culture and Finance.

Originally conceived as a technical guide, the manual was well received by the authorities present and is being considered for implementation as public policy guidelines through a ministerial resolution.

The IDOM team will present the manual’s recommendations at an upcoming workshop to promote the La Caldera route as one of the country’s main tourist attractions. In addition, the IDB has expressed interest in expanding the results of this consultation into a widely distributed publication that could serve as a model for other countries in the region.

Join us on this exciting journey to position Panama as a leader in sustainable tourism and outdoor recreation.
