Operation of the first train of the Montevideo – Paso de los Toros central railroad.

Uruguay’s Central Railway enters the next phase with the successful operation of the first test train. The event, which took place on April 2, marked an important milestone in the launch of the project, with the inaugural line running from UPM’s pulp mill in Pueblo Centenario, Paso de los Toros, to the port of Montevideo.

The rail line, which will be officially inaugurated on April 16, is the result of international cooperation and the joint efforts of several entities. IDOM has played a key role in the development of this ambitious project, working for the Central Railway Construction Consortium, made up of prestigious companies such as Sacyr, Saceem, NGE and Berkes.

This project represents an investment of more than 1.25 billion euros, making it the largest infrastructure project in the history of Uruguay. The initiative includes the improvement and adaptation of approximately 270 kilometers of track, the construction of 23 passenger stations, including the innovative Las Piedras underground station, and the construction of 17 new interchanges.

The project focuses not only on freight mobility, allowing trains to travel at 80 km/h with an axle load of 22.5 tons, but will also allow for passenger transportation in the future. This will ensure an efficient and sustainable transportation system for generations to come

IDOM, with its BIM methodology, has played a crucial role in the development and implementation of the project, with the collaboration of teams in the Bilbao, Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay offices.

Starting from the basic design provided by the client at the beginning of the contract, IDOM redefined the solutions to make the construction of the project viable, developed the detailed design, coordinated the additional works to the project and provided technical support during the execution of the works.

This progress represents an important step in the modernization and infrastructure development of the country, paving the way for a more connected and prosperous future for all Uruguayans.

We are proud to see our projects become a reality!
